Probably the
only one of its kind in the nation, the Boll Weevil Monument was erected
in the center of the main intersection of the south Alabama town of
Enterprise in December of 1919. It was intended to show the
profound appreciation of the citizenry for the insect and what it did to
force the diversification of the local economy away from cotton.
This unique statue was
erected by the citizens of
Enterprise in Coffee
County, Alabama. |

| This old
courthouse building was erected in 1877 and immediately became home to
one of what has become known as the '13 ghosts of Alabama. In
1878, a man was arrested for burning down the previous courthouse and
was being held in the garret of the present building. As he peered
out of the north window at a mob gathering below, lightning struck
nearby, indelibly etching his image on the pane. The building
has fallen into disrepair yet, until only recently, it was still being
used as the counties only courthouse. |

| Music
has long been a tradition in the northeastern section of Alabama known
as Sand Mountain. This area has produced many of our country's and the
world's most famous musicians. Yet many of the remaining residents still
gather often just to "jam" because making music is the
heart. In this painting, "Sand Mountain Serenade", Scott depicts
just such a scene. This small group has gathered after a long days work
to relax and produce the sweet sounds of the mountain for their ears
only. |

Approximately fourteen miles southwest of Port Gibson, Mississippi stand
the stark ruins of Windsor. Smith Coffee Daniel II completed
construction of Windsor in 1861 and ironically died only weeks after its
completion. The mansion survived the Civil War only to be
destroyed by accidental fire on February 17, 1890. All was lost
except for the columns and the ironwork. One flight of metal
stairs from Windsor is now installed at Oakland Chapel on the campus of
nearby Alcorn State University.
