President's Mansion
President's Mansion The University
of Alabama President's Mansion was built between 1839 and 1841 as a more
suitable residence for the University's new president, Basil
Manly. According to history, Louisa Frances Garland, wife of
president Landon C. Garland, valiantly saved the stately residence from
destruction when Union troops destroyed the campus on April 4,
1865. The mansion, which has undergone a number of restorations,
assumed its predominately white appearance in 1908.

Gorgas House Gorgas House The Gorgas House was built in 1829 and is one of four structures on the campus of the University of Alabama to survive the Civil War. The house, situated in the center of the campus, is now a museum and is open for public tours. It was named for General Josiah Gorgas, president of the University in 1878, who became ill and was given the house by the Board of Trustees. His wife Amelia Gayle Gorgas, became the University's Librarian.

Denny Chimes
Denny Chimes Located on the Quadrangle on the main campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Denny Chimes was dedicated in 1929 and named in honor of former University President George H. Denny. At the base of the tower lies the Alabama football captains walk of fame which bears the hand and foot impressions of the Crimson Tide team captains dating back to 1949. The chimes themselves were restored in 1986 and are
programmed to ring on the hours.

Campus Images Campus Images Three familiar
sites on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa are the
Capstone itself, the Round House, and the old Observatory building (now
Maxwell Hall). the Capstone was erected on the mall as a memorial
to the Cadet Corps composed wholly of students who bravely fought in
vain to save their Alma Mater from destruction by Union forces in April
of 1865. The Round House which was built in 1860 as a sentry post
and the old Observatory were two of only four structures on the campus
to escape complete destruction by invading Union troops.
